Voluntary Emissions Reporting Program Launches in Brazil

BRASILIA, BR -- Twelve Brazilian companies have helped launch a greenhouse gas reporting and reduction effort in the country this month.

The Brazilian Greenhouse Gas Protocol Program is a voluntary effort for businesses to measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions, modeled on the Climate Registry in North America.

Participating businesses will track their emissions using the GHG Protocol and receive training and information on best practices for cutting emissions. Data on annual emissions will be made publicly available online. The GHG Protocol is a widely accepted accounting tool for quantifying and managing greenhouse gas emissions, developed by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

Brazil, which puts out the fifth largest amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, is a developing country with no obligations under the Kyoto Protocol. Any emissions tracking and reductions are all voluntary efforts.

“Providing business with internationally recognized tools to enable the effective management of their greenhouse gas emissions is a necessary step towards managing and reducing global emissions," said Björn Stigson, president of the WBCSD.

The founding corporate members of the Brazilian Greenhouse Gas Protocol Program are Anglo American, Banco Do Brasil, Bradesco, CNEC, Copel, Natura, Nova Petroquímica, O Boticário, Petrobras, Sadia, Votorantim, and Wal-Mart Brasil.
