Washington, D.C. -- Despite challenges posed by climate change and efforts to address it, the forest products industry largely stands to gain from new opportunities that emerge as policies and practices evolve in the drive to combat global warming, according to a report released this week by the World Resources Institute (WRI).
The report released Monday by the environmental think tank acknowledges that risks exist, but also found that "climate change presents a potentially game-changing opportunity for the forest products industry."
Key opportunities to consider are new markets and products, competitive advantages in relation to carbon-intensive substitute materials, enhanced forest productivity, increased demand for sustainable forest management, and green preferences, the report said.
Action and timing are of the essence, according to Andrew Aulisi, director of the markets and enterprise program at WRI.
"The next year or two is an important window for climate change policy negotiations in the U.S. and internationally," Aulisi said in a WRI statement. "The industry needs a coordinated effort to improve the position of sustainable forestry to become part of the climate change solution. Anything past this window may be too late. Competing industries are already moving quickly on their positions.”
The 74-page report, "Trees in the Greenhouse: Why Climate Change is Transforming the Forest Products Business," examines how climate change may affect the forest products industry, outlines risks and opportunities, and highlights possible next steps and strategies for the industry and investors.
